Den Pulitzer-vindende forfatter, Jake Davis (Russell Crowe), kæmper med nogle voldsomme fysiske mén, der er eftervirkningerne af en fatal bilulykke, som har efterladt ham alene med sin 5-årige datter, Katie. Tynget af skyld over tabet af sin kone kæmper han en daglig kamp for at opfostre sin datter bedst muligt. Men Jakes familie tvivler på hans faderlige kompetencer og slæber ham i retten for at få forældremyndigheden over Katie. Fortællingen skifter fra 1980'erne til i dag, hvor den nu 30-årige Katie (Amanda Seyfried) kæmper mod de dæmoner, der stammer fra hendes urolige barndom.
